The more I continue to see diet ads/pills/plans fill up our email inboxes, our home mail, 30 second tv spots, infommercials, etc… the more frustrated I get with the general philosophy of how people can “look good”.
We live in a society (I am referring to America) that seems to thrive on beauty and wealth. As always, those that fall into the struggling income bracket will always be deemed less beautiful and have the least amount of opportunities to do things for themselves, in terms of finances, health and beauty.
That is just a fact of life. Those with less seem to struggle more than those with more.
Now, the point I want to make is in terms of beauty. Getting “thin” is what people are shooting for when they diet. I say that referring to those that fall in the majority. However, I consider this ignorant thinking.
Why is it ignorant?
Because if your concern is to lose weight and you will do what it takes to lose that weight, you are not thinking of health. Health and diet are not synonymous.
Americans are fat. In terms of statistics, Americans tend to be among the fattest as a nation. So, naturally companies will try and take advantage of people by throwing them diet information.
“Do this to lose weight, take this pill, drink this shake, by this workout machine, etc…”
How about health? Will taking that pill that grabs the fat BEFORE it sticks to your body be healthy for you? Sure, you might lose the weight by taking the pill, but are you being healthy?
When people say the following comment:
I need to lose weight, inside my head I scream because people don’t realize how ignorant of a statement that really is. Try an alternative.
I need to get in shape or I need to get healthy.
The truth is, if your goal is to get in shape or get healthy, you WILL LOSE WEIGHT.
I wish these companies that pop out ad after ad would for once make an ethical decision and try and promote health, not thin.
Focus on health
To focus on your health, follow a sensible eating and execise program. Eat healthy and workout, and naturally you will lose weight, but at the same time you are getting in shape and treating your body good.
If you have an eating disorder or you are popping pills with the intention to lose weight, you are destroying your body.
Growing up, there was an ad on the wall in one of my classrooms. It merely said the following:
If you looked on the outside how your insides looked, would you still smoke?
The image showed a woman with a cigarette and black gunk all over her body.
It was a strong message to me as a youngster. Truth is, we might look beautiful on the outside, but are our insides (organs, etc…) as healthy as they need to be?
Like I said earlier, popping that pill that grabs the fat prior to reaching your body might keep you thin, but I am sure your heart doesn’t appreciate the artery clogging cholesterol you just gave it.
Shoot for health and getting in shape, the weight-loss you are wanting will come off, I promise.
