Life is stressfull, we all know this. Most people have a high level of stress in their lives and we are always looking for ways to lower that stress. This could be drinking certain herbal teas, going to a massage therapist, jumping in a hot tub, meditating, or finding a silent spot in your home just to drown out any outside noise. Those are all great methods for trying to make your stress level lower.
For me, I have a place where I let all my worries, all my tension, and all my thoughts disappear. The shower. Many of us have a ritual where we take a quick shower in the morning in order to smell good for work. Nobody wants to smell horrible in front of a client. However, how often do you utlilize the shower as a place to relax? How often do you go into the shower with only the intention to relax? Tonight, I did and it FELT GREAT!
Lately, I have had a lot of stress in my life. Not necessarily bad stress, but stress nonetheless. I was in need of a good shower, but I didn’t just want to clean up, I wanted to just relax and let go of my worries. I got the water fairly hot, stepped in, and just let the water run on my body for about 2-3 minutes. No soap, shampoo, or facial wash. The whole time I focused on the water hitting my skin. I blocked out thoughts of finances, a future baby, a new house, sore muscles, etc… but just trying to relax underneath the hot water. I then proceeded to go about my typical washing ritual but I spent MORE time on each section and allowed myself to enjoy my shower rather than just get the shower over with so I could be on my way. It was probably a 30 minute shower. The whole time, I focused on relaxing my muscles, feeling my skin warm up from the water, and really washing my body versus giving it a quick wash.
I am not sure what methods you use for relaxing, but once a day or a couple times a week, I recommend taking a nice long hot shower and focusing on ONLY relaxing your body and letting your stresses pour down that drain.
It works for me, maybe it will work for you.
