If you have a small kitchen, organizing it becomes very important because it reduces clutter. An organized kitchen without clutter increases safety and cleanliness which is extremely important especially in a kitchen. This is because there is a considerable amount of activity in your kitchen everyday. The following are a few helpful pointers on how you can organize your kitchen.
Group all items according to functionality in your kitchen. This includes both utensils and foodstuff. For example, keep sharp objects like knives and can openers together in a drawer; and keep all your sauces together in a basket on the cabinet. This way, you'll know where to get the item when you need to.
Place your kitchen items near to where they are to be used. For example, keep forks, spoons and plates in a location near the sink so that it is easy to keep them after they are washed. Another example is to keep microwave-able containers in pull-out drawers near the microwave oven. This allows you know intuitively know where to look for these items; and to easily retrieve and keep them once you are done with them.
Design your kitchen in a way that most of the storage space is between your head and knee level. Then, store the items that you need to use frequently in this storage space so that you do not need to use ladders or strain your back when you need to get them. However, you will also need some storage space in 'out of the way' locations (for example, high up near the ceiling) where you can place your infrequently used items out of the way. Keep a ladder in the back yard so that it would come in handy when you do need to get to these items.
If you have a small kitchen and kitchen cabinet, buy wire baskets, hooks/rails and shelves to maximize the space. You will be surprised how much extra items you can keep in your limited storage space through the use of these gadgets. Besides that, these gadgets also help in making the place organized and clean.
Besides all the above, you need to keep in mind that your kitchen is where you have:
- Utensils and equipment that can be dangerous if not kept and stored properly
- Food which needs to be kept properly so that it will remain clean and fresh
As such, you should always organize your kitchen with safety and cleanliness in mind. One of the most important things to keep in mind is to keep dangerous utensils and chemicals in locations away from the reach of young children. For example, you can hang your cleaning solutions on a hook high above the reach of young children. Also, plan to have a 'safe and dry' area to put your food way from steamy and damp areas like the sink. This will prevent your food from getting mouldy fast.
If you organize your kitchen well, it will be a safe, nice and cosy place to be in. You may very well find it to be your favourite spot at home!
