How to address your fear of going to the dentist

Posted by: venom

For many of us, going to the dentist is and will remain as one of our worst fears in life. The thought of another person using a drill on our teeth or using a pair of pliers to pull out our teeth is truly frightening. In most of the cases where the patients are frightened of a trip to see their dentist, they will only go when there is already quite severe pain and the damage is already quite bad. This causes complications in treatment which increases and strengthens the patient's fears. This is a vicious cycle which needs to be broken. The following are a few things that a patient who is afraid of going to the dentist can do to make their visit more pleasant.

Firstly, tell the dentist that you are frightened. There is no shame and you will probably be among the majority of the dentist's patients. A good dentist will try his best and go out of his way to make your visit more bearable once you tell him that you are afraid. Ask the dentist about the treatment and the steps that the dentist will take in treating your case. If you know the treatment, it will ease your worries and you will know what is going to happen and how long it will take.

Most people worry that since their mouths would remain open most of the time, they are not able to communicate with the dentist. One good thing to do is to agree with the dentist on hand signals that you can use to tell the dentist that you're in pain or you want him to stop. This gives you a feeling of control over the situation and will definitely put you more at ease.

You can also try to distract yourself during the treatment. A good example of this method is to bring along a personal music player with earphones; and play a recording of a serious discussion that you would need to focus on in order to understand. If your mind is focused on something else, you would be surprised how fast the treatment would pass.

Another method is to think positively during the treatment. If you have discussed the treatment with your dentist, go through the steps and assure your self that there are only a few steps left before the session will end. Some good thoughts include "the dentist is understanding and will make my visit as comfortable as possible", "don't worry, it's going to end soon" or "the dentist has already agreed that I can stop this anytime I feel uncomfortable".

One last thing to do is to remember to eat only a light meal before going to the dentist; and to avoid consuming stimulants like coffee or tea. A heavy meal would make you uncomfortable during the treatment and stimulants would increase your anxiety.

Remember that the dentist is trying to help you and you should treat him like your friend. Do not wait until there is unbearable pain before going to the dentist this will only make the situation worse and increase and lengthen your suffering.
