How to ease sensitive skin problems

Posted by: venom

Having the problem of sensitive skin is becoming more prevalent nowadays due to our modern lifestyle. We are increasingly subject to more stress and are constantly exposed to pollutants and chemicals in our environment. Some of the more common symptoms include:
1. Itchiness and rashes
2. Inflamed redness on the skin
3. Acne break-outs
4. Irritated and dry skin

Although there are some triggers of sensitive skin problems which are difficult to overcome (e.g. environment-related), there are some common triggers which we can do something about easily. One of the more common causes of sensitive skin is working or sleeping in an air-conditioned room. Air-conditioned air is both cold and dry - both of which causes additional irritation to the skin. As such, if you are constantly working in an air-conditioned environment; or if you stay in a hot climate country and always sleep in an air-conditioned room, make sure you moisturize your skin properly. Using a good moisturizer ensures that you retain your skin’s moisture.

A second major trigger is bathing or soaking for long periods in hot water. Surprisingly, long exposure to hot water is actually very drying for the skin. As such, try to bathe in warm water and take shorter showers or soaks. If you have sensitive skin, try to reduce going to hot saunas.

Another common major trigger is the use of unsuitable skin-care products. Some skin-care products cause allergic reactions and should be used with caution, especially if you have sensitive skin. If you find that you have an allergic reaction after using a skin-care product, stop using it immediately. Let the symptoms subside over a few days while seeking medical attention. Use only reputable skin-care products that are certified for use with sensitive skin.

Certain types of food also cause allergic skin reactions if you have sensitive skin. Although some types of food contain more allergenic properties compared to other types of food, it is normally difficult to generalize and is more of a case-to-case basis. As such, from your own experience, try to note the types of food that causes a reaction and try to reduce the intake of such foods. Keep a log of such foods so that you can remember not to consume them.

You will notice that all the above points are very simple - yet commonly ignored by most people. If you have sensitive skin, these few simple steps go a long way in reducing your discomfort.
