Most busy mothers would consider grocery shopping a chore. It is definitely not the same as window-shopping in a mall or shopping for trinkets in a flea market. However, shopping for groceries would still need to be performed at least once a week to replenish household stocks. Here are a couple of things you can do to make your grocery shopping as quick and efficient as possible.
It is absolutely necessary to plan your shopping before-hand by creating a shopping list. You do not want to start having to remember what you need to buy when you are at the store. Sit down at home prior to the trip to the store and note down the goods that you need to buy. It would be good if you can create this list in the order of priority that way, when you are hard-pressed for time, you can skip the items at the bottom of the list. Once you have created the list, stick to the list when you are at the store. Do not get distracted and start looking at items that you do not require.
Put any discount coupons that you may have into your purse before the trip so that you will know exactly where they are when you need them. Having them with you in a known location will also remind you to use them. Quite often, people forget that they have discount coupons and do not actually use them.
Plan your schedule such that you do your grocery shopping when it is less busy. That way, you do not need to contend with the crowd which can definitely increase stress levels if you're already in a rush. Also, you will probably make less impulse-purchases if you not rushed through the aisles.
When you are actually doing the shopping, compare the 'per unit' prices of the goods. Many times, the goods are packaged in bulk and you may not know which items are more economical if you simply compare the packaged prices. Also, if you purchase in bulk, try to look for items that are available as 'single servings' within the main package. This allows you to use small portions of the item while allowing the remaining portions to be kept safely without spoiling.
Besides the quantity, another very important item to check for is the expiry date of the goods. Sometimes the grocery stores reduce the price of items that are about to expire to make the items more attractive to the customers. However, even though the price may be lower, the 'about to expire' goods may not be suitable for you if you cannot consume everything quickly especially so if you have a small family.
If possible, during checkout, compare the items with your list as you pass them over to the cashier. That way, you can be sure that you did not forget anything on the shopping list. However, depending on the time, the store may be busy and there may be a long line at the payment counter so you may have to check this before you proceed to queue up at the payment counter.
After you have checked out, take note of the number of bags that you are taking away from the counter. This will prevent you from having to guess or wonder if you have left anything at the counter or in your car.
Finally, try to enjoy your grocery shopping. If you plan your grocery shopping properly, it will be a pleasant experience and you will start to look forward to go to the store. This will make it feel less like a chore.
